Lesson 3 – Serving Others in Community
God is your heavenly father, and all Christians are like brothers and sisters of the same family. “…this household is the church of the living God…” (1 Timothy 3:15). “Church” is not a place of worship, but is a family of believers. Our Father promises to answer prayer and provide all that we need. We are called to a community who love one another by serving one another and encouraging one another with loving accountability to obey the commands of God.
Share the most significant thing God has said to you in the past week and how you responded in obedience. Who did you share the last lesson with?
Why should you attend church worship and be part of a small group?
In church there are mature Christians to help you grow in your relationship with God. This is God’s command - “And let us not ________ our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage and warn each other, especially now that the day of his coming back again is drawing near.” Hebrews 10:25 NLT
How do we love others in the family of believers and body of Christ?
Serving with our Spiritual Gifts. Romans 12:3-8 (1 Corinthians 12) The Spirit gives each member of the church different gifts or ways to serve others. We need the all the different gifts that others have to be able to grow and serve the Lord effectively (1 Corinthians 12:14-27).
Are you serving others with your spiritual gifts?
Why should we serve others? (1 John 3:16-18, Mark 10:45).
Do you know how the Spirit has gifted you to serve in the church?
- Has God given you a passion to do something?
- Has God called you to serve in a certain ministry?
- Do you see a need that you sense God could use you to meet?
In the church we are part of a body (family) where different people have different gifts. We need the gifts of others. If we understand that we need others, we cannot function without the body in the way God intends.
We are called to serve others, to give ourselves away and teach them to obey the commands of God (Matt 28:19). But how can we meet needs and help them obey if we do not really know them and what is going on in their lives?
Are you in a small group that encourages each other to love and obey God?
Establish a group of 3-5 people where you can work together on obeying all that the Lord commands. Identify where the Lord is teaching you to obey and ask your brothers or sisters in the Lord to pray for you and encourage you (Hebrews 3:13) each week until God has helped you to obey Him in that area.
Jesus had a small group of twelve. Sharing life in a small group enables us really know each other and encourage one another to obey all God’s commands (Hebrews 3:13, 10:24-25) How can we know others unless we are in a group that is small enough for everyone to share what is happening in their lives?
Do you have a small group that meets weekly to help one another obey God?
Guidelines for a community of loving accountability:
- We restore God’s design by loving one another
- Keep anything shared in the group confidential (trust).
- Be gracious and encouraging as we work through failures
- We pray for others to be restored where sin has caused brokenness
- We work together to share the gospel (good news) with those who need to hear about God’s love and design.
Each time we meet, we will set GROW GOALS to apply God’s Word. Is there an area of obedience that God showed you in the last week of reading His Word?
Pray and ask God who He wants you to share this week’s lesson on serving others with. Each week we will set GO GOALS of who we will plan to go tell (train) what we have learned.
